Lancaster Convention Center Opens
| The Lancaster Convention Center and the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square in downtown
Lancaster, PA celebrated their long-awaited opening on June 19th. Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is home to the oldest Amish settlement in America. Lancaster has been home to dozens of Mennonite Meeting Houses located throughout the county. Now, it also is home to a state-of-the-art meeting facility offering the latest in technology and amenities, along with a visitor experience that few destinations can match. The Lancaster Convention Center can host conventions, trade shows, and other special events in over 90,000 square feet of space that includes a 45,000 square foot exhibit hall and a 9,000 square foot ballroom. It can accommodate groups from five to 5,000. The adjoining Marriott hotel offers 300 guest rooms and additional meeting space. The center and hotel are located right on Penn Square, the center of downtown Lancaster City, incorporating part of the 19th-Century Beaux Arts façade of the former Watt & Shand Department Store. The complex is a stone's throw from the Central Market, the nation's oldest continually operating farmers market dating back to the 1730's. The complex is also adjacent to the Stevens & Smith Historic Site, a museum in the former residence and law office of the former U.S. Congressman and abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens. Stevens is considered by many to be the father of public education. Lancaster City itself has a fascinating history. In the 1700's it was the largest inland city in America, and it served as the nation's capital briefly during the War of 1812 when British troops attacked Washington, D.C. Lancaster County is already home to a number of top-quality convention and meeting facilities, including the Lancaster Host Resort & Conference Center, Eden Resort & Suites, and Willow Valley Resort & Conference Center. Now there is a new player in town to invite meetings and conventions to get away to the peaceful pace of the Amish Country. Lancaster is convenient to many major metropolitan areas. It is 90 minutes from both Philadelphia and Baltimore, two hours from Washington, D.C., and three hours from New York City. Lancaster is also 45 minutes from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the state's capital. |
